Summary

Miss Night’s kindergarten class found a class in Indonesia to partner with and exchange ideas and experiences. Both classes have creative a fictional character that attends the opposite school. Through Twitter the classes communicate with the fictional character to learn about the other region of the world. They exchange information and answer questions from the weather to the orangutan preserve close to the Indonesian school.  The 5 year old are able to log their ideas in a journal; instead of sentences most students respond by drawing pictures. In just a few short weeks Miss Night’s class has learned lifelong lessons through the use of technology.

 

New or interesting concept

I love the concept of adopting a sister school in another country to meet technology standards. By corresponding with “Ella” through Twitter, Miss Night allows the Canadian students to feel as if they belong or have a part in the Indonesian classroom. Twitter is an easy, fun way for students to communicate with classrooms across the world.

 

My response to article

As a parent, I would love for my child to be part of Miss Night’s classroom. How cool would it be to communicate with an Indonesian classroom on a regular basis? Miss Night is able to incorporate meaningful real life concepts into her classroom. For example, her class graphs the weather. Graphing weather from our own town could become boring and meaningless, but graphing their sister school’s weather becomes fun. It also gives the teacher a chance to compare and contrast. Miss Night’s class was able to relate to the tsunami in Indonesia, because they were able to put a name with faces. The tsunami hit home with them and they cared about their friends across the ocean. Technology is a wonderful tool to use to make learning more meaningful to our students. This article gives me inspiration to incorporate more into my own classroom.
